The second boom in Death Valley was tourism, started in the 1920 by Herman Eichbaum. After several failures in getting a toll road approved, on May 4, 1926 the Eichbaum Toll Road (between southeast of Darwin and Stovepipe Wells) was certified complete. The toll rates were set: $2 per motor vehicle and 50cent per person.
The hike runs up the south fork of Marble Canyon into the Death Valley Wilderness Area for about 2-1/2 miles where much of the canyon is deep and narrow, the gentle grade provides easy hiking, and there is little to clim over.

The largest dune is called Star Dune and is relatively stable and stationary because it is at a point where the various winds that shape the dunes converge.
Due to their easy access from the road and the overall proximity of Death Valley to Hollywood, these dunes have been used to film sand dune scenes for several movies, including films in the Star Wars series.
On the heels of the Gold Rush, silver and gold were discovered in the Valley in the 1850s and borax in the 1880s. One group of miners during the 1849 California Gold Rush dubbed the searing, waterless landscape upon finally finding a pass through the Panamint mountains. In between many of the dunes are stands of creosote bush and some mesquite on the sand and on dried mud, which used to cover this part of the valley before the dunes intruded.

The depth of the sand at its crest is 130-140 feet (40-43 m) but this is small compared to other dunes in the area that have sand depths of up to 600-700 feet (180-210 m) deep.

Red Hill has the distinction of being the youngest volcano in this area, estimated to have been active 10,000 years ago.
Red Hill, also known as Cinder Hill lies in the Coso Vocanic Field and is located north of Litte Lake and south of Lone Pine.
Little Lake was established largely as a travels's stop along what eventually became US 395. In the 1920s, a trip from LA to a town such as Lone Pine might take 2 or 3 days necessitating a stay at locations like this before continuing onwards. Its famous landmark was its namesake, rock-faced hotel constructed in 1923, it burned in 1989 and was never reopened.

A city in need. In the early 20th century the City of Santa Monica was faced with a problem: "How and where do we depose of our sewage?" Ultimately the decisions as made to build the 1,600 foot long Municipal Pier with a pipeline underneath it to run treated sewage out to the ocean. Fortunately, this process was discontinued in the 1920s.
Opening day of the pier was September 9, 1909. Obscuring the unpleasant function of the new Pier was the fact that it was build as the first concrete on the US west coast.
The pier became an instant favorite among the fishing community. Men and women, whether young, old, rich or poor enjoyed the ample supply of fish and simple pleasure of dropping a line and waiting for a bite.
From the time the Municipal Pier was conceived, the community wished to add an amusement park to complete with the neighboring Ocean Park and Venice Piers.
Enter Charles Looff, a famous carousel carver turned amusement entrepreneur, who answered that wish by building a new, wider pier with an amusement park along the south side of the Municipal Pier - thus creating two piers in one!
